Golden Globe Dresses 2009

Oh award shows, I know you guys like to think that you're so important honoring the great actors, actresses, and animated characters of the year, but award shows don't really make interesting tv. On the other hand, award show dresses make great internet search material. For every red carpet event, there are dresses we ooo and ahh over, and there are those that we cringe over.

The Best Dressed

Kate Beckinsale was floating on the red carpet with this divinely structured gown. Absolutely loved it. Simple but elegant.


Evan Rachel Wood's dress was my favorite. Her gown was so intricate with ruffles, sequins, and tulle, but black kept it from looking too busy.


From first glance, I knew this dress was Versace and one of the most beautiful I've seen. January Jones pulls the Hollywood glamour look together with flowing blonde locks.

If Jones represents old Hollywood, then Kristin Scott Thomas represents old Paris. Her Lanvin dress is Parisian chic, and make her look absolutely charming.

Rumer Willis is Miss Golden Globes 2009. It's nice to see someone wearing rich vibrant colors especially paired with that flaming red hair. The pleats are an elegant touch. Not my favorite but I really liked it.

The Worst Dressed

The bad thing about sheer fabric covering the entire top half of your body is that your bra will most definitely be seen. On the other hand, without the sheer panel, she would be wearing a boring black dress. I'm just glad she didn't decide to go braless.

Oh Drew, I would have loved to put you in my best dressed list. The dress you are wearing is so lovely. Sheer steely-blue fabric that swirls around you evokes images of a tempest storm. Unfortunately, your hair also evokes images of a tempest storm.

Black, White, Grey, and Blue

I love the combination of black, white, grey, and blue this season. It's all the rage on the runways and high-end department stores for Fall/Winter 08. Soon we'll see these colors in the bargain bins at Walmart if Miranda Priestly is correct.

Muliplicity of Use

Since everyone's wallet is stretched a little tight this year, maybe we should try to be a little more creative with our existing wardrobe. There are some things that can be worn in different ways. It's fun and economical to put an unconventional spin on something you already own. Maybe try wearing a skirt as a top or a shawl as a kimono. While surfing the web, I found some great ideas from American Apparel and Issey Miyake on how one item can be worn in many different ways.

AA's Bandeau Dress can easily transform from a dress to skirt. It can be worn tied around the neck or strapless. There are over 15 possibilites.

American Apparel's innovative spirit doesn't stop there. This season they came out with the circle scarf- a long piece of fabric with ends sown together. It can be wrapped around the neck like a traditional scarf but it can also double as a cardigan or minidress.

And then there's Issey Miyake's Madame T:8 shawl. It's basically a large stiff fabric with a hole cut in the center for the head.

Comfy New Shoes

I bought so many shoes these past few months that I imposed a self-ban on any further shoe purchases. But after reading the glowing reviews on Fashionista, I’m been dreaming of these comfy sandals from Old Navy. They were only $34.50 original price, but my wallet was hurting so I figured I would wait a while and then maybe, just maybe, consider them.

For some reason, yesterday I decided to stop by Old Navy. While rummaging through their sales racks, I found a black pair and I succumbed and bought them. I came up with all these reasons for me to get them to assuage my guilt.
I reasoned that:

1. They were way cheaper ($23)
2. I would wear them all the time since they were comfy, cute, and trendy
3. There was only one left in my size and if I didn’t snap them up now, I would regret it.

I also found this cute green shirt dress for $23. I loved my shoes but only just liked the dress. I don't know, should I return the dress?

Purdy 'ellow Dress

I'll be honest, this photo made my day. The dress was bright and yellow and flowy. The whole thing proclaimed 'it's spring, god d@mn it, let me frolic with the grace of a Degas ballerina.' I agree whole-heartedly and will immediately whip out my brightly colored skirts and dresses. This vibrant picture is part of a photo collection called Float Like a Butterfly in NY magazine. There are seven more lovely dresses to go gaga over so click, click, click. If you really want to know about the above dress, it's a Michael Kors chiffon halter gown, and it costs $5,995, wow!

Elie Saab Couture S08

His clothes are stunning, no doubt about it, but year after year, Saab creates the same look. The different seasons all look the same; no dress or season stand out. All Elie Saab dresses are silky, draped, beaded, and glamorously red carpet. I can’t say the Elie Saab shows are particularly interesting or surprising, but they display the most beautiful gowns ever created. If I ever have the money to afford a couture dress, it will definitely be an Elie Saab one.

This baby blue dress is my favorite for '08.

How I wish I could buy it.

Instead I will lust in vain.
